The BNO080 / 085 is a 9-axis system-in-package (SiP) designed for rapid development of sensor-enabled augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robotics, and IoT devices. It integrates high-performance accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes with a low-power 32-bit ARM M0+ MCU in a compact package. Hillcrest's Freespace sensor hub software is pre-integrated on the BNO080 / 085 to deliver advanced 9-axis and 6-axis motion tracking. The device offers application-specific configuration, functionality, and performance in a turnkey solution that helps reduce time-to-market, development time, and costs, while ensuring high accuracy and quality. This IMU utilizes the BNO080 sensor, which combines a 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer with an ARM M0+ processor running sophisticated motion algorithms. The BNO080 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides precise rotation vector outputs, ideal for VR and heading applications, with static rotation errors of 2 degrees or less. All sensor data is fused and drift-corrected to deliver reliable and accurate motion information. The IC is suitable for integration into mobile devices to support virtual reality applications. The sensor delivers robust functionality through a comprehensive I2C library that provides rotation vectors, acceleration, gyroscope, and magnetometer data, step count, activity classification (such as walking or cycling), and calibration status. A demo application is available to visualize how IMU motion data, including quaternion output, can be used to manipulate 3D objects accurately. In addition to I2C, the sensor supports SPI and UART interfaces for flexible connectivity. When using UART, compatibility with standard serial communication tools is supported. This version includes an onboard 32 kHz crystal for improved timing precision and more accurate timestamps.
