GY-VL53L0XV2V Time-of-Flight Distance Sensor
The VL53L0X is a time-of-flight distance measurement system integrated into a compact module. This board is a carrier for the VL53L0X; please carefully review the VL53L0X datasheet before use.
Utilizing time-of-flight sensor technology, the VL53L0 precisely measures the time it takes for emitted pulses of infrared laser light to reach the nearest object and reflect back to a detector, essentially functioning as a miniature, self-contained lidar system.
This time-of-flight (TOF) measurement allows for accurate determination of the absolute distance to a target without significant influence from the object's reflectivity.
The sensor can report distances up to 2m (6.6ft) with 1mm resolution, but its effective range and accuracy (noise) heavily depend on environmental conditions and target characteristics like reflectivity and size, as well as sensor configuration. (Sensor accuracy is stated to range from ±3% at best to over ±10% under less optimal conditions.)
Distance measurements are accessible via the sensor's I2C (TWI) interface, also used for configuring sensor settings. The sensor provides two additional pins: a shutdown input and an interrupt output.
The VL53L0X is an excellent IC, but its small, lead-free LGA package makes it challenging for the average student or hobbyist to use.
It also operates at a recommended voltage of 2.8V, which can complicate interfacing for microcontrollers operating at 3.3V or 5V. Our breakout board addresses these issues, simplifying sensor use while maintaining a compact size.
Pin Description:
VDD: Regulated 2.8V output. Nearly 150mA is available to power external components. (If you wish to bypass the internal regulator, you can instead use this pin as a 2.8V input with VIN disconnected.)
VIN: Main 2.6V to 5.5V power supply connection. SCL and SDA level shifters pull the I2C lines high to this level.
GND: Ground (0V) connection for your power supply. Your I2C control source must also share a common ground with this board.
SDA: Level-shifted I2C data line: HIGH is VIN, LOW is 0V
SCL: Level-shifted I2C clock line: HIGH is VIN, LOW is 0V
XSHUT: This pin is an active-low shutdown input; the board pulls it up to VDD to enable the sensor by default. Driving this pin low puts the sensor into hardware standby. This input is not level-shifted.
